the white residue is probably due to the products you're using and/or improper rinsing.  using a clarifying shampoo, gunk be gone or herbal vinegar rinse to remove the white stuff.

as far as your crown being slow to lock, your hair will not lock at the same rate.  some sides may grow quicker than others.  your focus should be to keep any loose hairs from crawling (when your locks begin to share the same rootbed and combine).

your crown may need more regular maintenance but in time, it should begin to mesh with the rest.
