I've been trying to figure out the best way to demonstrate some of the more popular natural styles. There's no easy way to do it that's for sure. Many natural styles are based on learning by doing so although descriptive texts help, hands-on experience is what you need.

When I was learning how to do certain styles, I practiced on my favorite doll, Kia. Kia is almost as fly as me because not only has she had cornrows and zulu knots, but she's also had a few styles that no one has attempted before...and probably never will.

There are many different ways to style natural hair. If you feel that going natural means you're limited to only a few styling options, you're playin' yaself.

Natural hair not only frees you from chemical processes, but if you learn to experiment and use your imagination, you can also free yourself from perceived limitations. In addition unlike relaxed hair, natural hair styles aren't limited to a specific length. For the majority of natural styles if you have at least 4 inches of hair, you can do a shorter or longer version...can the same be said for relaxed hair?

Discovering new styling options may be as simple as paying attention to passersby, looking in magazines or surfing the web. Just because you haven't seen a style on others doesn't mean you can't create your own.

Kia has had many a 'do that never quite made it out the door, but that never stopped me from trying. Eventually, I found a look I liked and just decided to be brave and go with it. Who knows, I may start my own trend.

In this section, we describe some of the more popular styles and give a quick tutorial on how each look can be achieved and maintained.

Many of the styles featured here can be combined so you're only limited by your imagination. Once you have perfected one styling technique, try using it in culmination with another. You may be pleasantly surprised with the results.
