Permanent colors will cause the most damage to your hair and if you're trying to go for an extreme color change (3 shades lighter or darker than your natural hair color), you could alter the texture of your dreadlocks.  Generally, the chemicals in permanent colors will cause dreadlocks to stiffen, but most of the damage is reparable.
