I believe it's important to know the properties of the products you'll be working with so let's begin by discussing the items you'll find in a coloring kit. Normally when you purchase a permanent color you get two bottles of ingredients; the color and the oxidizing agent or developer. The last additive is heat.
The color is available in a variety of forms; creams, gels or shampoos. The color in and of itself will not permanently change your hair color, but when it's mixed with an oxidizing agent, oh boy...time to break out the chemistry books and the face masks cause this stuff stinks.
